OMG! It's thrilling to see that I'm not the only one that use physical landmarks. I did my first half marathon in 2010 and after a hiatus in 2011 (other than a 10 mile run) I'm plan to do a half and the Chicago Marathon for the first time. It's pretty tough with me hectic schedule, dietary changes and blah, blah, blah. I'm not fast at all, but I'm out there. Keep us posted!

Like your blog, too! I've run two half-marathons (I consider that my whole marathon! :) -- back in 2004 & 2005, I think. You can do it!!! I highly recommend the Galloway program with John Lineberger, but sounds like you're already into it & have a plan. I'm the Community Relations Manager for Communities In Schools, and Safe Journey (program for teen moms to help them graduate from high school and learn good parenting skills, etc.) is one of our programs. If you want to learn more and perhaps be a mentor for a teen mom (or help in other ways), contact me at mjohnston@cischarlotte.org. I'll put you in touch with Judy Sanders-Bull, the Director of Safe Journey & she can tell you more. We work with about 100 students (pregnant and/or parenting) annually. ~May Johnston

The only way I worked through that first mile was to go "landmark to landmark." On the trail I was running regularly at the time, there were several physical landmarks (streams, quarter-mile markers, large trees) and I would mentally make a deal with myself, "You have to make it to the tree/bridge/marker etc." If I felt horrible after reaching that point, it was ok to walk. But if I made it to that one and still felt ok, I had to set a goal for the next landmark. After a couple runs doing this, I found myself always wanting to get to the next marker and the mile just happened. Now I was running at a 12-13 min/mile pace - if I had been going harder, I don't think I could have reached that mile running as quickly. This same approach gets me through my long runs now.

It's amazing how much we cut out by just not eating out. I think we could probably do better than we're doing now, but I'm going to have to make some extra efforts on cost-cutting.

I'll try to make it over this week, may be a day late...I'd like to be a little more creative with my photos for it :-)

We're not quite on a $30/person budget, but that would be great if we could. Do you do more freezing/long-term storage on that kind of budget?
